It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from August 2003 to May 2006, with the individual chapters collected into 25 tankōbon volumes. The plot centers around Light Yagami, a high-school student who discovers a mysterious notebook that is capable of killing anyone whose name is written within its pages. Named "Death Note", the book takes on various forms throughout the series; Light initially dubs it as an adviser and uses it to commit numerous murders in order to create his ideal world, dubbed "Die Another World". The series was first adapted into a live-action film released in Japan on June 17, 2006, which gained a strong cult following. This was followed by a sequel titled Death Note II: The Last Name, which featured the same lead actors. The series was later adapted into three live-action television specials, on December 13, 2006, March 2, 2007 and June 25, 2008 respectively. The weekly anime Death Note was produced by Madhouse studio and aired in Japan on Nippon Television from October 4, 2006 to June 26, 2007. A television special was aired on December 31, 2008, before the anime adaptation. A series of spin-off novels written by Nisio Isin were also adapted into anime format and aired between October and December 2008. An animated film sequel to the live-action film released in Japan on June 17, 2006.[2] The first season of the weekly anime was licensed by Viz Media in North America and other parts of the world. The DVD box covers of the first four volumes, released between May and December 2006, each had an image of Shinigami Ryuk. Viz Media has dubbed these episodes into English for release on DVD and BD. The first DVD was released on November 7, 2007. The series is also licensed by NIS America in North America for streaming and digital download release. The first season was released on Blu-ray format in Japan on June 25, 2010,[3] followed by a limited edition Blu-ray Box set featuring an exclusive theatrical trailer, cast commentaries and serial killer commentary.[4] On April 19, 2008, Warner Bros. Japan announced that it had acquired the rights to direct a live-action film version of Death Note. The film is directed by Shūsuke Kaneko and stars Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Turner, Tsukasa Takeuchi as L, Kiyomi Asai as Rem, Hiroyuki Watanabe as Matoko Koizumi, Ryou Hirohashi as FBI Task Force leader L (in his appearance in the manga), Takahiro Sakurai as Natsuhiko Tsumuji and Kirin Kiki. Death Note will be released in Japan on August 25, 2008.[5] The official trailer of the movie was revealed on July 19, 2008.
